Definition – Osteoarthritis means degeneration of the articular cartilage or of the entire joint, including the articular cartilage, the synovium (joint lining), the ligaments and the subchondral bone. It causes pain and stiffness, especially in the knee, hip and thumb joints.

Prevalence – Common in all races and backgrounds, it usually appears after in the forties, and the incidence is more in women than in men. Common sites of discomfort are the knees, vertebrae, hips and joints that bear much of the weight of the body.

Pathophysiology - Degeneration of articular cartilage of the joints causes friction of bone and causes severe pain
